Voice typing for dyslexia

You know the sentence. Getting it through the keyboard is the problem.

The sentence is clear until one difficult word interrupts it at the keyboard. By the time the spelling is fixed, the rest may be gone.

What dictation changes

Dictation moves spelling out of the way. Hold a key, say the sentence, and release to insert it at your cursor.

Dictate is our app. It is a tool, not a treatment. If speaking is easier than spelling, it can reduce friction between thought and page.

The sentence was never the problem. The spelling was.

What the polish step does

The optional polish step removes fillers, fixes punctuation and capitalization, and splits run-on sentences. It does not add ideas.

Three things worth setting up

01 · Free

Try the built-in first

Apple Dictation is free and may be enough for short messages. Sessions can stop after a pause and automatic punctuation can be uneven. Setup is in our guide to dictating on a Mac, ; commands are in the cheat sheet.

02 · Also free

Turn on Spoken Content

macOS Spoken Content reads selected text aloud for free. Find it under System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content.

03 · $8/month

If the built-in runs out of road

Dictate records while you hold the key, adds punctuation, and inserts text in any focused field. It costs $8 a month, one plan. . Compare it with Apple Dictation on the Dictate vs Apple Dictation page.

What it will not do

Dictation does not proofread. A misheard word may still be spelled correctly, so review important text. Add names and unusual words to the glossary, and use Spoken Content to hear the result aloud.

Questions

FAQ

Does dictation help with dyslexia?

It can help put words on the page without spelling them at the keyboard. It is a tool, not a treatment, and will not suit everyone.

Is there free voice typing on a Mac?

Yes. Apple Dictation is built in and may be enough for short text. It stops after about 30 seconds without speech and automatic punctuation can be uneven.

What about having text read back to me?

Use macOS Spoken Content under System Settings > Accessibility. It reads selected text aloud for free. Dictate does not provide text-to-speech.

Do I still need to proofread?

Yes. A misheard word may still be spelled correctly, so a spellchecker will miss it. Review the text or use Spoken Content to hear it aloud.

Does Dictate need setup or voice training?

No. Subscribe, sign in, and speak. There are no models or voice profiles. Add unusual words to the glossary once.
