Casting call · For writers

Dictation for writers: talk the first draft out.

Dictation is for first drafts. Speak to get the words down, then revise them at the keyboard.

Who it helps

Who actually dictates

Voice helps when the idea is clear but the page is still empty.

The novelist

I know exactly what happens in this chapter. I’ve known since Tuesday. It’s still not typed.

Speak the scene while it is vivid. The result will be rough; that is what revision is for.

The journalist

Filing at six. It’s ten to five and the story is still in my notes app.

Talk through the piece, then tighten it by hand before filing.

The blogger

Two posts a week for four years. My wrists have started to negotiate.

Voice moves the first draft off the keyboard. Revision still happens by hand.

Four parts of the workflow

A dictated draft, start to finish

1 · Walk and talk

Hold the hotkey and talk the scene through. Pacing the room now counts as writing.

2 · The draft lands

She took the last ferry alone, and told no one.

Let go of the key. The sentence is in Scrivener, or Ulysses, or Docs, wherever your cursor was.

3 · What happened in between

so she takes the ferry, um, the last one, alone, and she doesn’t tell anyone

She took the last ferry alone, and told no one.

The polish step removes fillers and false starts before insertion.

4 · The keyboard edit

Then edit the draft at the keyboard.

What to expect

What dictation won’t do

It won’t edit. A dictated chapter still needs a full revision pass.

It takes practice. Composing aloud feels different from conversation. Use short bursts while the habit forms.

It needs a connection. Audio travels over TLS, is transcribed, then discarded. Dictate is not an on-device tool.

Writers ask

FAQ

Drafting, punctuation, app support, and audio handling.

Is dictation good for writing novels?

Yes, for first drafts. Dictated chapters can sound loose or conversational, so plan to revise them by hand.

How do writers dictate?

Work in short bursts. Know what the scene needs, hold the key, and speak for up to a few minutes. Then revise at the keyboard.

Do you have to say punctuation out loud?

Not with Dictate. Apple Dictation supports automatic punctuation, but it can be uneven; spoken commands give you more control.

Does it work in Scrivener and Google Docs?

Yes. Dictate works in Scrivener, Ulysses, Word, Pages, Obsidian, Google Docs, and other text fields.

Is my audio kept anywhere?

No. Audio travels over TLS, is transcribed, then discarded. History stores text only.
