Pick by where you write and whether you want free, managed, local, or
file-based transcription. For a ranked app list, see

Built-in Apple Dictation
Press the shortcut and speak into the active field. It is already
installed, needs no account, and works well for short text.
Pick this way if you dictate occasionally and the right price is zero.

Managed hold-to-talk apps
Dictate is our managed app. Subscribe, sign in, then hold a
hotkey and speak. Release to insert the text at your cursor in
native apps, browsers, Electron apps, or terminals. There are no
models or API keys to manage.
It costs
$8 a month.
Audio travels over TLS, is transcribed, then discarded. History
stores text, never recordings. Transcription needs a connection.
Pick this way if you dictate daily, everywhere, and want zero maintenance.

On-device
Local-model apps
Superwhisper runs Whisper-family models directly on your Mac, and
VoiceInk can do the same in local mode. Audio stays on the Mac and
those modes work offline once the model is downloaded. VoiceInk
also supports optional cloud providers.
You choose and download the models, and performance depends on
your Mac. Superwhisper's lifetime tier was
third-party-reported around $249.99 and VoiceInk from about $25 as of
mid-2026. Prices move, so check their sites. See
Dictate vs Superwhisper.
Pick this way if on-device processing is a hard requirement, or you enjoy the tuning.

Google Docs voice typing is free in Chrome, Edge, and Safari, but
only works inside Docs. Gmail has no built-in voice typing.
Microsoft Word's Dictate needs Microsoft 365 and a connection.
Pick this way if the audio already exists and you want it as text.

Voice to text on Mac
FAQ
What people search before they pick a way.
Does a Mac have built-in voice to text?
Yes. Apple calls it Dictation. Turn it on under System Settings > Keyboard, press the shortcut, and speak into the active field. It is free, but stops after about 30 seconds without speech and its automatic punctuation can be uneven.
What is the best free voice to text for Mac?
Apple Dictation is the best place to start because it works in most text fields. Google Docs voice typing is also free, but only works inside Docs in Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
Can I use voice to text offline on a Mac?
Apple Dictation processes speech on-device for supported languages. Superwhisper and VoiceInk can also run local models. Dictate is not local: transcription runs on our servers and needs a connection. Only its subscription check works offline.
How accurate is voice to text on a Mac?
Accuracy depends on the engine, microphone, accent, and vocabulary. We have not run a formal benchmark across these tools, so we will not quote a percentage. Compare how much editing each one leaves you instead.
Is voice to text the same as Voice Control?
No. Dictation turns speech into text. Voice Control operates the Mac by voice, including buttons, apps, and windows. Standard macOS Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on.
How do I turn a voice recording into text on a Mac?
Use a file-transcription app. MacWhisper, for example, transcribes audio files locally on your Mac. Dictate is for live speech at the cursor, not recordings.
What does Dictate cost?
$8 a month, with one plan and no tiers. Unused subscriptions are refunded in full. Once you transcribe anything, that month is non-refundable.
One key for the whole Mac.
Sign in and speak. No models or API keys. $8 a month.
