01 · For lawyers

Dictation for lawyers, on the Mac Dragon left behind.

Dragon for Mac was discontinued in October 2018. Dictate keeps the familiar workflow: hold a key, say the letter, and insert the text in Word, Outlook, or your case-management system.

02 · The cast

Two lawyers, one habit.

The partner

Dictating since the tape era

I dictated to Dragon for fifteen years. Then they stopped selling it for the Mac.

There is no current Dragon Legal for Mac. Dictate needs no voice profile or command grammar: sign in and speak.

What happened to Dragon for Mac

The associate

Six matters, one keyboard

The memo is due at five, and my notes from the morning call are still in my head.

Dictate the file note while the call is fresh. Speak the memo’s first draft, then spend your time editing it.

$8/month, one plan

The day-to-day detail (attendance notes, the glossary, which two macOS permissions it needs) is on our page for legal teams.

03 · The route

Where your audio goes.

The full route, including the transcription provider.

Stop 1 · Mic

Audio is captured to a temporary file and deleted after transcription.

Stop 2 · TLS

It is sent to the Dictate API over TLS.

Stop 3 · Transcribe

Our provider turns the audio into text, which returns to your cursor.

Stop 4 · Discarded

Audio is discarded when the request completes. History stores text, never recordings.

The longer version, including how requests are signed, is on the security page.

If your firm requires on-prem

Dictate is a cloud tool. If your policy requires on-device processing, use a local option such as Superwhisper. Our Superwhisper alternatives page covers more local options.

FAQ

Confidentiality, Dragon, case-management systems, and pricing.

Is dictation confidential enough for client work?

Audio travels over TLS to the Dictate API and our transcription provider, then is discarded. History stores text, never recordings. Dictate is a cloud tool, so confirm it meets your firm’s policy.

What replaced Dragon Legal on the Mac?

Nothing official. Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac in October 2018, and Dragon continued on Windows. Mac users now rely on general dictation apps.

Can I dictate into my case management system?

Yes. Dictate works in any focused text field, including browser and desktop case-management systems, Word, and Outlook.

Do I have to train it on my voice?

No. Speak normally. Add party names and specialist terms to the glossary once.

Is there a free trial?

No. Dictate costs $8 a month. Unused subscriptions are refunded in full; after any transcription, the month is non-refundable.
