Hands-free access for a motor disability, injury, or RSI. It is free, built in, and processes on-device.
Where it strains
It always listens, so stray speech can become a command. Mixing commands with dictation takes practice.

Can I use Voice Control and keyboard dictation at the same time?
No. Apple says keyboard dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on. Voice Control has its own dictation mode. Turn Voice Control off under System Settings > Accessibility to restore the regular shortcut.
Is Voice Control good for dictation?
Yes, especially if you also need hands-free control. For text entry alone, its always-listening commands add complexity that a hold-to-talk tool avoids.
Is Voice Control free?
Yes. It is built into macOS under System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control. After a one-time speech-file download, Apple says processing happens on-device.
What about Talon for coding by voice?
Talon is built for hands-free computing and voice coding. If that is your goal, evaluate it before a general dictation app. Dictate enters text but does not control the Mac.
Does Dictate work while Voice Control is on?
Dictate is separate from Apple keyboard dictation, but Voice Control may hear your speech as commands. We have not tested every combination. Say “Go to sleep” before dictating and “Wake up” afterward.
