Turn it on in four steps

Step 01

Open the Doc in a browser that has the feature

Use desktop Chrome, Edge, or Safari. Firefox and the mobile Docs apps do not have Voice typing.

Step 02

Open Tools, then Voice typing

Or press S. A microphone panel appears. Allow browser microphone access when prompted.

Step 03

Click the mic and talk, punctuation included

Words appear at the cursor. Say punctuation and supported editing commands such as “select paragraph” or “delete last word”.

As discussed comma we’ll ship Friday period

Step 04

Click the mic again to stop

Click the mic again when you finish.

Gotcha · the mic dies with the tab

Voice typing stops when the Docs tab loses focus, sometimes without a clear notice. Keep the tab in front while speaking.

The rules it plays by

Rule 01

The browser does the listening

The browser performs speech recognition. Chrome, Edge, and Safari are supported on desktop; Firefox is not.

The upgrade · Dictate

One key, any browser, every field

Dictate is our app. Hold a key and speak; release to insert the text in any browser, including Firefox, or any other focused field. Switching tabs does not stop recording. Punctuation and optional polish are automatic.

It costs $8 a month and needs a connection. Audio travels over TLS, is transcribed on our servers, then discarded.

The short version

Keep the Doc. Drop the rules.

Docs voice typing is free. Dictate costs $8 a month, works in every browser, and keeps recording when you leave the Doc.

FAQ

Browser support, shortcuts, focus loss, and punctuation.

Does Google Docs voice typing work in Safari?

Yes. Google added desktop Safari and Edge support in May 2024. If Voice typing is missing, update Safari and check the Tools menu.

Why does voice typing stop when I switch tabs?

Voice typing only listens while the Docs tab is focused. Switching tabs or apps stops it.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for voice typing in Google Docs?

Cmd+Shift+S on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows opens the panel. Click the mic to start and stop.

Why is Voice typing missing from my Tools menu?

Check the browser first: Firefox is unsupported. You also need edit access and a desktop browser; the mobile apps use the phone keyboard instead.

Does voice typing work in Google Sheets or Gmail?

No. Google voice typing works in Docs documents and Slides speaker notes, not Sheets or Gmail.

Do I have to say punctuation out loud?

Google Docs supports spoken commands such as “period,” “comma,” and “new paragraph” in some languages. Dictate adds punctuation automatically.

Does Dictate work in Google Docs?

Yes, in any browser, including Firefox. Dictate needs a connection: audio travels over TLS, is transcribed on our servers, then discarded. History stores text only.
